Find the concern that sounds most like yours.
Skin concerns do not arrive neatly labeled. Start with the part that sounds familiar. We can assess from there.
Clinical skin care for the face and body. This is the service family for breakouts, congestion, dryness, texture, resurfacing, and body-skin work.
See Skin Restoration Therapy →Hair removal and follicular care, including ingrowns and intimate-area concerns when appropriate and after the required consultation.
See Clinical Grooming →Breakouts, clogged pores & body acne
Congestion is not limited to the face. The back, chest, shoulders, and other body areas can become clogged, rough, or painfully inflamed too.
Acne-prone facial skin & congested pores
“I keep breaking out, my pores feel clogged, or the same areas never seem to clear.”
What we can assess
Visible congestion, blackheads, surface buildup, skin comfort, product use, and what your skin appears able to tolerate that day.
What care may include
Skin Restoration Therapy with cleansing, appropriate exfoliation, extractions when suitable, hydration, and practical home-care guidance.
Back breakouts & congestion
“My back is so sore that wearing a shirt or sitting against a chair can bother it.”
When we may be able to help
If the skin is intact and there are no open, draining, or infected-looking areas, we can assess the back and determine whether body Skin Restoration Therapy is appropriate.
What you may have heard it called
People often call this a back facial. At The Body Mechanist, it lives under Skin Restoration Therapy because it is clinical skin care for the body, not a separate spa service.
What the visit can focus on
Cleansing, congestion, appropriate exfoliation, extractions when suitable, and supporting the skin on an area that is difficult to reach and manage on your own.
When not to book skin care first
Open or draining lesions, rapidly worsening redness, warmth, significant swelling, fever, or skin that appears infected should be evaluated medically.
Dryness & dehydration
Tight, flaky, rough, or thirsty-feeling skin does not always need a stronger product. Sometimes it needs a calmer plan.
What you might notice
Tightness, flaking, rough patches, skin that drinks up moisturizer, or makeup suddenly sitting differently.
What we can assess
Visible dryness, hydration needs, barrier comfort, current products, and whether exfoliation, replenishment, or simply less irritation is the better direction.
What care may include
Skin Restoration Therapy focused on hydration, gentle exfoliation when appropriate, and a realistic home routine.
When medical care is more appropriate
Persistent cracking, bleeding, severe redness, swelling, widespread rash, or significant pain should be medically evaluated.
Dullness & uneven texture
If your skin feels rough, looks tired, or no longer has the smoothness you are used to, we assess the surface before choosing how much exfoliation makes sense.
What you might notice
Surface buildup, rough texture, dullness, uneven-feeling areas, or skin that does not seem to respond to your usual routine.
What care may include
Cleansing, hydration, and appropriate exfoliation within Skin Restoration Therapy. More is not automatically better.
Uneven tone, visible pigmentation & fine lines
Resurfacing can be useful when the goal is tone, fine lines, and surface texture, but the skin still has to be a good candidate for the service.
What we assess
Visible tone and texture, skin history, current products, sensitivity, recent procedures, and how much resurfacing your skin can reasonably tolerate.
What care may include
Professional peels or microdermabrasion when appropriate. Microdermabrasion is used here for uneven tone, fine lines, and surface texture.
Sensitivity & barrier comfort
Stinging, tightness, visible redness, or skin that suddenly reacts to everything is a reason to assess before adding more products or stronger exfoliation.
What we can assess
Visible irritation, recent products or procedures, exfoliation history, skin comfort, and whether the skin is suitable for service that day.
What care may include
Gentler Skin Restoration care, simplified product guidance, or postponing resurfacing until the skin is calmer.
Follicular bumps on the backs of the arms
Those rough or bumpy areas on the backs of the upper arms are common reasons people ask about body exfoliation.
“The backs of my arms are bumpy and clogged. I’ve called it folliculitis before. Can you do anything with it?”
What we can assess
Whether the skin is intact, how inflamed it looks, visible follicular congestion, rough texture, sensitivity, and whether exfoliation is appropriate.
Where a body scrub may fit
When the skin is calm and intact, a body exfoliation or scrub within Skin Restoration Therapy may be a good option for rough follicular texture and buildup.
Ingrown hairs, clogged follicles & intimate-area concerns
Follicular congestion is not limited to the face or arms. Ingrowns and clogged pores can also show up along the bikini line and in intimate grooming areas.
“I have clogged pores or ingrowns in an intimate area. Can you look at that without making it weird?”
What we can assess
Intact ingrown hairs, visible follicular congestion, hair-growth pattern, grooming habits, friction, and whether the skin is appropriate for aesthetic care.
What we can address
Within aesthetic scope, we can address suitable ingrowns and follicular congestion, discuss grooming and skin-care changes, and decide whether waxing or follicular care makes sense.
Privacy & consent
Intimate-area work is handled professionally and matter-of-factly, with the required consultation and informed-consent process before the service.
When we stop
Open, draining, severely inflamed, unusually painful, or infected-looking areas are not treated as routine ingrowns and may need medical evaluation.
Irritation from shaving, waxing or friction
Razor bumps, chafing, tenderness, or recurring irritation can change how you want to groom an area. We assess the skin first rather than waxing automatically.
What we can assess
Visible irritation, grooming pattern, friction points, product use, hair-growth direction, and whether the skin is suitable for waxing that day.
What the next step may be
Changing grooming timing, supporting the skin between appointments, choosing Clinical Grooming and Follicular Care, or leaving the area alone until it settles.
When skin care is not the first stop
We take skin concerns seriously, which also means knowing when aesthetic care should wait.
- open, broken, draining, or infected-looking skin;
- rapidly spreading redness, warmth, swelling, fever, or significant pain;
- severe or pustular folliculitis;
- a suspicious, new, or changing lesion;
- eye involvement or symptoms close enough to the eye that medical assessment is appropriate;
- anything that requires diagnosis, prescription care, or falls outside aesthetic scope.
Common Questions About Skin Care & Waxing
These answers help you choose a lane. Parking, arrival, first-visit logistics, and general preparation belong on Start Here: What to Expect.
How do I choose a facial or skin-care service?
You do not need to identify a technique first. Start with Skin Restoration Therapy and tell us what you are noticing. Your Licensed Aesthetician assesses the skin and helps choose an appropriate approach.
Can you help with painful breakouts or clogged pores on my back?
Yes, when the skin is intact and appropriate for aesthetic care. Skin Restoration Therapy can be used for the back and may include cleansing, exfoliation, suitable extractions, and skin-care guidance. People often call this a back facial. We do not work over open, draining, or infected-looking areas.
Can a body scrub help the bumps on the backs of my arms?
It can be appropriate for rough, intact follicular texture after we assess the area. If the bumps are actively inflamed, pustular, open, painful, hot, or spreading, we would not scrub the area and would recommend medical evaluation instead.
Can you assess clogged pores or ingrown hairs in intimate areas?
Yes. Intact ingrowns and follicular congestion in intimate grooming areas can be assessed and addressed within aesthetic scope. Intimate work follows the required consultation and consent process. Open, draining, severely inflamed, or infected-looking areas require a different next step.
How do Skin Restoration Therapy and Clinical Grooming differ?
Skin Restoration Therapy is clinical skin care for the face and body, including appropriate exfoliation and resurfacing. Clinical Grooming & Follicular Care covers hair removal and follicular concerns such as ingrowns. Sometimes the concern points clearly to one lane; sometimes assessment helps decide.
What should I know before a peel or microdermabrasion appointment?
Your skin history, current products, recent procedures, and present skin condition matter. We assess whether resurfacing is appropriate before the service. Microdermabrasion is used for concerns such as uneven tone, fine lines, and surface texture when the skin is a good candidate.
When should I ask a medical professional instead?
Medical evaluation is more appropriate for open or draining skin, suspected infection, severe or rapidly worsening inflammation, significant pain, eye involvement, a suspicious or changing lesion, or anything outside aesthetic scope.
Start with the concern. We’ll help with the next step.
Skin Restoration Therapy is the starting point for face and body skin. Clinical Grooming & Follicular Care is the starting point for waxing, ingrowns, and follicular grooming concerns.
